Posted in Walking in Naxos OnThe ancient Kouros are 3 large statues of young men, present in Naxos, unfinished that we can admire today in the places where the sculptors were working on their realization. Two of them are located in Flerio, near the village of Melanes and the third is located near the village of Apollonas.
The first is located in Flerio, near Melanes, where we meet Ellinas, the Greek, which measures the beauty of 6 meters and dates back to the 7th AC. It is lying in a quarry, inside a very beautiful garden. It is a statue of white marble and represents a young man, naked, with his arms be flanked by his body. The second kouros is in position lying inside a field always in Flerio a few steps from the other Kouros.
The third giant is located at Apollonas, the small port north of Naxos, inside an old mine you can observe it in all its beauty, 10 meters long and it is said that it should represent the God Dionysus, for this was called the Colossus of Dionysus. Actually, if you look at him well, you will see an old man, with a beard, which is why one thinks he should represent an older God!
But what were they supposed to represent? It seems that they can represent the god in human form, a new conception of the gods, seen as human beings, but much larger, for this reason they were so long, precisely to represent the power and greatness of the gods.
