Chora is the capital of Naxos Island, but for the most of the tourists, it is known as Naxos Town! It is the typical Greek small town, a perfect mix between the modern and the ancient Greece. You can find shops, restaurants, taverns and many more entertaining. Very suggested is a walk along the seaside, its street called “Paralia” is the perfect place where to spend a romantic night. The Portara is the door of the temple of Apollo, it is the first thing you’ll see arriving with the ferry. With its majesty, it will make you love this place from the first sight. The legend says that this doorway to the Temple of Apollo was built in 522 B.C. by the Tyrant Lygdamis but it was never completed. The Portara is situated on a small island in front of the town. Very suggestive is to wait the sunset to take the best picture of your Greek holiday. The other famous place of Chora is the Venetian Castle. It has built in 1207 by Markus Sanoudos II and it is a very interesting place to visit with the Archaeological Museum and the Catholic Cathedral. Two of them are located in Flerio, near the village of Melanes and the third is located near the village of Apollonas. They are about 10 meters high representing the God Dionysus. The legend says that the 3 statues of Kouroi express the way in which the Gods were conceived in that historical period, as human but much larger than men. Only one hour to the north by car from Chora, you can reach Apollonas, a typical fishing little village on the sea, the restaurants are so close to the water that you will have the feeling to eat with the fishes.
