Astypalea is an island in the Dodecanese, the Greek archipelago located in the southeastern Aegean, close to Turkey.
This island has a butterfly shape and it is the right place for those who want to get in touch with an authentic Greece. During the summer there are few sea connections so it is a little bit complicated to reach this island from the Cyclades Islands.
From Naxos you can reach Astypalea with the Blue Star, the trip is 4 hours! If you are in Athens, you can fly to Astypalea with a domestic flight, in less than 1 hour you’ll arrive at your destination.
This island is very famous for the Castle that are on the top of the hill, with an incredible and panoramic sea view. From this point you’ll feel like a real King! The Venetian fortress built in the early fifteenth century by the noble Quirini family. This incredible building was able to accommodate up to 8000 people inside.
Its inhabitants resisted the constant threat of pirates, but they were unable to resist the terrible earthquake of 1956 which caused the collapse of the houses. Despite this, the castle is still well preserved and represents an impressive sight as well as a magnificent vantage point from which to observe the Chora and the sea.
Inside you can also visit the characteristic Panagia Kastriani Church.
The Chora of Astypalea is one of the most beautiful Chora of the Greek Islands. We suggest you to reach the castle from the small beach and from the windmills, you’ll feel in love for the small streets and the million of steps to reach the top of the hill!
Chora is a picturesque village of white houses, with romantic corners, breathtaking panoramic views and charming little places to drink and eat.
Pera Gialos (also called Skala) is the characteristic port area, where are located nice hotels, bars, taverns and typical souvenir shops. It has a lovely seafront promenade and a small beach that is perfect for a quick stop. The Chora is the historic center, built around the Venetian fortress.
The beaches of Astypalea are very different from each other, but they are very beautiful, like Livadi, Maltezana, Agios Konstantinos, Kaminaki, Tzanaki, Steno and Vatses.
We suggest to visit the island with a 4 × 4 Jeep or take wonderful boat trips to the most beautiful beaches.
